Becknell climbed the ranks quickly during the War of 1812 and from his extensive service on the frontier while battling the British-backed Indians. He eventually reached the rank of Captain and was long known as Captain Becknell. After the military Becknell began trading and working on trade routes. He became the “Father of the Santa Fe Trail” which opened up trade with Mexico. Becknell led many other explorations for new routes and trapping expeditions. Becknell settled in Texas and served as commander during the Texas Revolution and even served briefly as a Texas Ranger. He amassed a sizable estate in land and livestock in Red River and died at the age of 68.

We named this Damascus hunting knife after William Becknell because of the amazing life that he led. It is easy to romanticize a life of exploration on the frontier, but we don’t take it for granted. Becknell lived a very full life and we believe he would have approved of this knife. Medium in size, this modified clip-point blade would be very handy on the frontier. Whether gutting an animal, slicing, or hand-to-hand combat, the clip-point tapers and drops the center axis of the tip so it allows a quicker and deeper puncture. A hole in the butt of the knife allows you to add a lanyard if so desired. Colter spent most of the following year trapping around what is now known as Yellowstone. In 1808, Colter was captured by the Blackfoot Indians. Darius soon discovered that the person who possessed the dragon’s claw would become a clairvoyant and would be able to see into the future. Every trip created more awe and fame when he returned to England. Fawcett left on his final trip in 1925, along with his son and son’s friend. Fawcett was a romantic and believed in the legend of a lost city in the Mato Grosso region of Brazil. Fawcett decided to travel light and without any local support. He believed this would make them less noticeable to the native tribesmen who were often hostile to explorers. Fawcett sent a letter to his wife in May of 1925, telling her that the trio was about to enter the unchartered territories of the Amazon. Unfortunately, no one heard from the three men again. There are many theories about what happened to the trio but no one knows for sure.
